Sports Medicine is Not Just for Athletes
Some may think that tennis elbows are only for tennis players, but you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from sports medicine.
A sports medicine physician is a doctor with specialized training who encourages lifelong fitness, prevention of illness and injury. These doctors treat patients of all ages, focusing on maximizing function and minimizing disability and time away from regular activities. They work to coordinate care with other providers, including primary care, nutrition, physical therapy and other specialties.
Sports medicine physicians are board-certified in their specialty, as well as family practice, internal medicine, emergency medicine, or pediatrics.
Conditions Treated in Sports Medicine
Sports medicine physicians see patients for many different reasons, but a few of the most common are joint pain and overuse injuries. Some of the specific conditions that sports medicine may be appropriate for are:
- Knee injuries
- Shoulder injuries
- Acute back pain
- Tendonitis
- Tennis elbow
- Finger dislocation
- Stress fractures
- Ankle sprains
- Muscle strains
- Mild traumatic brain injuries and other head injuries
Individuals who are looking to reach a fitness goal, prevent injury, or start strength training and conditioning can also see a doctor who specializes in sports medicine.
Treatment
Depending on the reason for your visit, treatment may include physical therapy, medication, splinting, casting or cortisone injections. Most problems can be treated in just a couple visits.
